Maryam Ibrahim Dan’azumi, a young Qur’anic memorisation student from Gombe State, has made history after emerging as the overall winner of the 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur’anic Competition in Saudi Arabia.
Maryam, who hails from Gombe State, represented Nigeria at the prestigious international competition held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where she competed against participants from several countries.
She took first place in the category covering memorisation of the entire Holy Qur’an, recitation, Tajweed and interpretation (Tafsir), delivering an outstanding performance that earned international recognition for both Nigeria and Gombe State.
A Historic First for Female Contestants
Maryam’s victory is particularly significant because her participation marked the first time females took part in the 46-year history of the competition.
Her achievement therefore represents more than an individual victory. It is a landmark moment for Nigerian girls participating in Qur’anic scholarship and an inspiring example of what dedication, discipline and quality education can achieve.
Before reaching the international stage, Maryam had already demonstrated her exceptional ability by winning at the local government and Gombe State levels, before emerging as the national winner and earning the opportunity to represent Nigeria in Makkah.
Gombe Governor Celebrates Historic Achievement
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has congratulated Maryam on her outstanding performance, describing the achievement as a source of immense pride for the state and Nigeria.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Ismaila Uba Misilli, the governor congratulated Maryam, her family, teachers and the wider Muslim community in Gombe.
Yahaya said Maryam’s success reflects the value of discipline, commitment to learning and the wealth of talent among young people in Gombe State.
The governor expressed particular excitement that her achievement could inspire more young people, especially girls, to pursue excellence in their chosen fields.
Governor Promises to Honour Maryam
Governor Yahaya also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the educational development of young people, including Qur’anic and religious education.
He said the government would continue to recognise and celebrate individuals whose achievements promote the positive image of Gombe State nationally and internationally.
The governor further disclosed that he looked forward to receiving and personally honouring Maryam when she returns to Nigeria, saying such recognition would encourage her to continue pursuing excellence.
Recognition for Her School and Teachers
The governor also acknowledged the important role played by Abubakar Siddiq Community Islamic School for Qur’anic Memorisation, Gombe, where Maryam received her training.
Her victory underscores the contribution of her teachers, family and institution to her development and success.
From emerging as a local champion to becoming Nigeria’s national representative and ultimately winning on the international stage in Makkah, Maryam Ibrahim Dan’azumi has written a remarkable chapter in the history of Qur’anic competitions.
Her story is a powerful reminder that talent, dedication and the right support can take young Nigerians from their local communities to the global stage.
