Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has directed a full investigation into allegations that female patients who wear hijabs were harassed in state hospitals, following claims made by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC).
MURIC had accused some medical staff in Borno of forcing female patients to remove their hijabs or refusing treatment unless they complied. The organization demanded formal apology and corrective action.
Governor Zulum, responding to the claims, ordered health agencies and hospital management to conduct thorough inquiries. He insisted that patients’ religious rights be respected, emphasizing that hijab is a lawful religious expression and should not be a barrier to accessing healthcare.
The directive also asked for immediate redress where harassment is confirmed, including sanctions for medical personnel found guilty and training to sensitize staff on religious and cultural sensitivity.
