TINUBU PARDONS PRE-INDEPENDENCE NATIONALISTS: MACAULAY, VATSA, SARO-WIWA, LAWAN AND 13 OTHERS

In a sweeping gesture of national reconciliation, President Tinubu has granted clemency to a number of pre-independence nationalist figures, including Herbert Macaulay, Festus Vatsa, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Waziri Lawan, among others, totaling 17 individuals.

The pardon, announced in a presidential decree, reaffirms their contributions to Nigeria’s struggle for independence and acknowledges past injustices. While some of these figures were long deceased, the pardons carry symbolic weight in re-examining historical legacies and healing old wounds.

Tinubu, in his announcement, described the gesture as a “restoration of dignity” to patriots whose efforts shaped Nigeria’s trajectory. He urged Nigerians to view the act as part of a broader agenda of unity and collective national memory.

The decision has already elicited praise from civil society groups, historians, and nationalist organizations, many of whom see it as overdue recognition of the sacrifices made by early freedom fighters.
