At a meeting of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) held in Lagos, at least ten state governors joined traditional leaders in calling for constitutional recognition of royal institutions in Nigeria’s governance framework.
Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, delivering the keynote address, argued that traditional rulers have long served as mediators, peace builders, and bridges between government and communities — roles they carry out informally and without formal legal backing. He urged the National Assembly to amend the constitution to grant them defined status.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, host of the meeting, supported the agenda, remarking that royal institutions have great moral influence and mediation capacity. Governors from Edo, Cross River, Kwara, and others attended, signaling broad interest in restoring legal dignity to customary authority.
