HOUSE TO HOST LEGISLATIVE DIALOGUE ON NATIONAL SECURITY ARCHITECTURE

The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution is partnering with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to convene a Legislative Dialogue focused on Nigeria’s fragile security framework. The high-level event, themed “Nigeria’s Peace and Security: The Constitutional Imperatives”, will take place on Monday, June 16, 2025, at the National Counter Terrorism Centre in Abuja.
Set against the backdrop of increasing insecurity, the dialogue will draw participation from Nigeria’s top security leadership, including NSA Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, DSS DG Oluwatosin Ajayi, and NIA DG Amb. Mohammed Mohammed. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to deliver a keynote address, while Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu will provide legislative perspectives.
Central to the discussions is HB-617, a proposed bill seeking the establishment of state police. Lawmakers, civil society actors, policy experts, and security practitioners will deliberate on necessary constitutional amendments to strengthen policing, inter-agency cooperation, and community-level peacebuilding.
Expected outcomes include a reform roadmap for Nigeria’s security sector and legislative frameworks to address national and subnational security threats. House Spokesperson Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr. said the initiative is part of the 10th Assembly’s resolve to translate dialogue into transformative security legislation.
