US President Donald Trump, left, and Britain’s King Charles speak during the state banquet in Windsor Castle, England, on September 17, 2025
King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to begin a high-profile four-day state visit to the United States on Monday, in what is expected to be the most significant overseas trip of Charles’ reign so far.
The royal visit comes at a symbolic moment, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence, when the original 13 colonies formally broke away from British rule under King George III in 1776.
It also takes place during a delicate period in transatlantic relations, as public differences have emerged between Washington and London over President Donald Trump’s military campaign against Iran.
Despite heightened security concerns following a recent shooting incident in Washington, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the visit will proceed as scheduled.
Arrival in Washington
King Charles and Queen Camilla will arrive in Washington, D.C. on Monday, April 27, beginning a packed programme focused on diplomacy, history, and the longstanding alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace said the trip would recognise the “shared history of our two nations” as well as the economic, security and cultural ties that have developed over generations.
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are expected to formally welcome the royal couple at the South Portico of the White House.
The opening day will include a ceremonial state arrival on the South Lawn, complete with military honours, music by the United States Marine Band, and a 21-gun salute.
The programme also features an inspection of troops, accompanied by the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, followed by remarks from President Trump.
In a notable first for a state visit, nearly 500 military personnel from all six branches of the U.S. armed forces are expected to participate in the ceremony.
Following the formal welcome, the king and queen will sign the White House guest book, take part in a diplomatic gift exchange, and join a receiving line with senior American and British officials.
Later in the day, the royal couple will attend a private tea in the Green Room before touring the White House beehive and Kitchen Garden.
Historic Address to Congress
One of the most anticipated moments of the trip will come when King Charles addresses a joint meeting of the United States Congress.
If it goes ahead as planned, Charles would become the first British monarch to address Congress since 1991, underscoring the enduring strategic relationship between both nations.
The speech is expected to focus on democracy, global security, climate cooperation, and the historic friendship between the two countries.
State Dinner at the White House
On the evening of April 28, President Trump and Melania Trump will host a formal state dinner in the East Room of the White House.
The event is expected to bring together senior members of the administration, lawmakers, diplomats, business leaders and prominent cultural figures.
Further details of the dinner programme are expected from the Office of the First Lady.
Visit to New York and Virginia
On April 29, the king and queen are scheduled to travel beyond Washington.
In New York City, they are expected to attend a ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial, ahead of the 25th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks.
The royal couple are also expected to meet first responders and local officials, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Later that day, they will travel to Virginia for events linked to America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, including a community block party and commemorative gatherings.
Farewell and Bermuda Visit
The state visit concludes on Thursday, April 30, with an official farewell ceremony at the South Portico of the White House and a departure event in the Diplomatic Reception Room.
After leaving Washington, the king and queen will continue to Bermuda for additional engagements scheduled for May 1 and 2.
Symbolism Beyond Ceremony
The visit carries significance far beyond royal pageantry. It comes at a time when the United States and United Kingdom are navigating shared security challenges, economic uncertainty, and differing foreign policy approaches.
For King Charles, the trip offers an opportunity to strengthen personal diplomacy early in his reign while reaffirming Britain’s special relationship with America.
For Washington, the visit provides a carefully staged display of unity with one of its oldest and closest allies at a sensitive geopolitical moment.
