Mexican President Grabbed, harassed in public; suspect arrested

A man has been arrested in Mexico City after assaulting President Claudia Sheinbaum during a public engagement, grabbing her by the chest and attempting to kiss her before being restrained by security officials.

The shocking incident, captured on video, occurred as Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, mingled with citizens after an event. The footage shows the assailant approaching under the guise of greeting her before making the assault. Security operatives immediately intervened and detained the man.

In a statement, President Sheinbaum condemned the act as “an unacceptable violation” and vowed to pursue legal action, calling it a reminder of the persistent culture of gender-based disrespect women face, even in public office.

Mexican women’s rights groups have rallied behind the president, urging stricter enforcement of harassment laws. The Office of the Attorney General confirmed that the suspect faces charges of assault and attempted sexual aggression.

The incident has sparked nationwide debate about public safety and the boundaries of access to political leaders, especially female heads of state.
