The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally apologised to Burkina Faso for an incident in which a Nigerian military aircraft violated Burkinabè airspace, sparking diplomatic tensions between Abuja and the West African nation. The apology was conveyed by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar during a meeting with Burkina Faso’s head of state, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, on 17 December 2025.
Tuggar expressed regret over procedural irregularities related to the aircraft’s entry into Burkina Faso’s airspace and acknowledged the strain the incident placed on bilateral relations. He also addressed controversial remarks made by a Nigerian political figure about the event, attributing them to misunderstandings and underscoring Nigeria’s respect for its neighbour’s sovereignty.
The official apology follows earlier regional concern after the aircraft, carrying Nigerian military personnel on an emergency landing, was detained by Burkinabè authorities. Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement successfully secured the release of all detained crew members, and the apology is seen as a gesture aimed at reinforcing mutual respect and cooperation with Burkina Faso amidst wider Sahel security challenges.
Both countries agreed to enhance consultations and collaboration, signalling a commitment to strengthen ties and address future issues through dialogue rather than confrontation. The development reflects ongoing efforts by West African states to manage complex regional security dynamics while preserving diplomatic norms.
