NNAMDI KANU’S LEGAL TEAM SWELLS AS TOP LAWYERS JOIN DEFENCE IN ONGOING TRIAL

As the high-profile terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), continues at the Federal High Court in Abuja, his defence team has seen a significant boost with the addition of new legal heavyweights. Senior Advocate of Nigeria Paul Esokoro and academic-turned-legal expert Dr. P.K. Obi have officially joined Kanu’s defence team. This development was revealed by Special Counsel to Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, who announced their courtroom presence as proceedings resumed.
Ejimakor, in a post on social media, described the expansion of the legal team as both strategic and symbolic, noting that “the more, the merrier” as the defence prepares for a lengthy and complex legal battle. The team, now comprised of several high-ranking Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), is positioning itself to rigorously challenge the federal government’s allegations, which center around terrorism and incitement.
Today’s session is primarily focused on the continuation of the prosecution’s case, with witnesses testifying against Kanu. Ejimakor hinted that the defence might not begin cross-examination due to time constraints, suggesting another adjournment could be likely.
This latest addition comes just days after the legal team welcomed four other eminent SANs—Prof. Onyechi Ikpeazu, Emeka Etiaba, Mela Audu Nunghe, and Joseph Akubo. The presence of such a formidable legal team underscores the national and international significance of Kanu’s case, which continues to draw intense scrutiny both within Nigeria and among diaspora communities.
So far, the prosecution has presented two witnesses who have reportedly given testimony and played recordings of Kanu’s alleged broadcasts as evidence against him. The trial continues under tight security, with observers keenly watching the unfolding legal drama and its implications for separatist activism and the broader security crisis in the South-East.
