Port Harcourt — Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has urged political actors in Rivers State to prioritize peace, unity, and the interests of the people above personal rivalries and political struggles.
Obi’s remarks follow the recent reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara after President Bola Tinubu lifted the state of emergency declared earlier in the state. In a statement, Obi emphasized that peace is essential for governance, development, and the welfare of citizens, warning that political instability will only deepen hardship for ordinary people.
He said: “What Rivers people need now is not more political fights but governance that delivers progress, jobs, and security. I call on all parties to embrace peace and allow democracy to work.”
Obi’s intervention comes at a critical moment when the Rivers State House of Assembly is pressing Fubara to submit a list of new commissioners and a fresh budget, signaling the continuation of political tussles.
The call for peace has been welcomed by civic groups and religious leaders in the state, who say Obi’s neutral stance may help calm tensions among rival camps.
