Paul Biya sworn in for eighth term as Cameroon’s President

Cameroon’s long-serving leader, Paul Biya, aged 92, has been sworn in for an eighth term as President following his controversial victory in the October 2025 election, officially securing another seven years in office.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the National Assembly in Yaoundé, was attended by top government officials, foreign dignitaries, and representatives of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM). In his inaugural address, Biya pledged to “preserve peace and stability” and continue his administration’s economic modernization agenda.

Biya’s re-election extends his rule, which began in 1982, making him the world’s oldest sitting head of state. The opposition and several international observers have decried the election as marred by voter intimidation, restricted media access, and limited participation in restive Anglophone regions.

Despite growing domestic discontent and calls for democratic reforms, Biya remains entrenched in power, bolstered by strong control over the military and ruling elite. Analysts say his extended tenure underscores the broader challenge of leadership succession across parts of Africa where aging leaders continue to dominate the political landscape.
