Relief supplies arrive after Hurricane Melissa Devastation

Relief convoys have begun arriving in regions hit by Hurricane Melissa after the storm caused widespread destruction across parts of the Caribbean, displacing thousands and disrupting power, water and communications networks. International relief agencies, regional governments and UN partners mobilised emergency supplies — food, water purification kits, shelter materials and medical teams — to the hardest hit communities.

Logistical challenges remain: damaged ports, flooded roads and persistent weather hampered rapid distribution, leaving some remote communities dependent on aerial drops. Search and rescue teams continued recovery operations, and early assessments warned of heightened risks of waterborne disease as sanitation systems were interrupted.

Authorities urged survivors to register at aid points so assistance could be prioritized, and donors pledged additional emergency funding to meet immediate needs while planning for longer-term recovery, including rebuilding resilient infrastructure.
