Rivers Impeachment Crisis as Assembly Members Fail to Resume Plenary

The Rivers State House of Assembly under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule has failed to reconvene for plenary as scheduled on Thursday, January 15, 2026, deepening political tensions following the initiation of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.

Lawmakers had adjourned last week’s sitting after commencing formal impeachment actions on allegations of gross misconduct, including the demolition of the state assembly complex and expenditure authorisations without legislative approval. The House subsequently set January 15 as the date to resume deliberations.

However, journalists and observers who visited the legislative quarters along Aba Road in Port Harcourt found no indication that plenary was set to hold, with lawmakers absent and no official explanation issued by the assembly leadership.

Efforts by reporters to reach the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Eneme George, for clarification were unsuccessful as calls and messages went unanswered.

The delay has amplified speculation over internal assembly dynamics, including reports of friction among lawmakers and pressure from political stakeholders. Some legislators previously sought to withdraw from impeachment actions, citing appeals for political stability and broader peace in the state.

Political commentators say the standoff highlights the fragile equilibrium within Rivers State politics, where party, ethnic, and governance disputes have increasingly influenced legislative conduct and public confidence.
