The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Yusuf as the new chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), along with the approval of two ministerial commissioners. The confirmations followed screening sessions during which nominees answered questions on plans to modernise population data collection and improve demographic planning.
During the plenary, senators emphasised the strategic importance of accurate population statistics for national development, from health and education planning to infrastructural investments. Yusuf, in his remarks during screening, pledged to prioritise a nationwide census-readiness plan, improve registration systems and expand digital data platforms to reduce undercounting and duplicate records.
The chamber urged the NPC to work closely with state governments, development partners and statistical agencies to ensure timely implementation of the commission’s mandates. With Senate approval secured, the new leadership will assume office and begin rolling out immediate programmes aimed at strengthening demographic governance.
