In a parallel political shift, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), aligning himself with Peter Obi’s growing opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general election.
Abaribe, a seasoned federal lawmaker and longstanding political voice from the South-East, cited irreconcilable differences with APGA leadership and its internal processes as key factors behind his decision to defect. He emphasised that ADC’s platform better reflects his commitments to internal democracy, accountability and national renewal, and that a united, principled opposition is necessary to offer Nigerians a credible alternative to the ruling party.
The senator’s announcement, made during the same political gathering where Obi declared for the ADC, underscores an increased consolidation of disaffected opposition figures within the party, raising its national profile and reshaping political dynamics as Nigeria moves closer to its next general election.
The defections of Obi and Abaribe are expected to influence broader opposition realignment ahead of 2027, with many watching whether this coalition can translate into strong electoral performance and a challenge to the APC’s dominance.
