Plateau State governor resigns from PDP amid expected party switch

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has formally resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending his association with the party under whose banner he was elected in 2023. The move was confirmed in a resignation letter dated 29 December 2025 and addressed to the PDP ward chairman in Ampang West Ward, Mangu Local Government Area, which was officially received on 30 December 2025.

In his letter, Mutfwang expressed appreciation to the PDP for providing a political platform and acknowledged the support of party leaders, members and supporters over the years. However, he cited “realities of the moment,” a commitment to “purposeful leadership,” and the desire for clarity of direction and improved service delivery as reasons compelling him to seek an alternative political platform.

Political observers and party insiders say Mutfwang’s exit from the PDP clears the path for a likely defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) — a shift widely anticipated after weeks of speculation and public statements by APC leaders welcoming him. The APC has already signalled plans to integrate the governor into its ranks, although Mutfwang has not yet publicly announced which party he will join.

The resignation marks a significant blow to the PDP, which has already suffered multiple high-profile losses ahead of the 2027 general elections, and reshapes the political landscape in the North-Central region. Analysts say closer alignment with the federal government through the APC could enhance federal support for Plateau State’s security and development challenges, which have been persistent issues during Mutfwang’s tenure.

Supporters of the PDP, however, have cautioned that formal documentation remains key to confirming any defection, with party officials noting that a resignation letter is the only basis for changing a member’s status, even as speculation mounts about Mutfwang’s next political home.
