Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has extended heartfelt sympathies to world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua following a serious road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that left two of his close associates dead and the boxer injured. The tragic crash, involving a vehicle carrying Joshua that collided with a stationary truck, has reignited national concern over road safety standards in Nigeria.
Akpoti-Uduaghan described the incident as a deeply painful reminder of the dangers posed by Nigeria’s highways and lamented the recurring loss of lives in preventable accidents. She emphasised that beyond expressing sympathy for Joshua and the families of the deceased, the crash highlights systemic weaknesses in enforcement and emergency response that must be urgently addressed.
In her statement, the senator urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other relevant authorities to swiftly enforce existing traffic laws and implement reforms to safeguard travellers. She also called for well-equipped highway rest stations and dedicated emergency rescue teams to reduce fatigue-related incidents and improve response times for accident victims.
Akpoti-Uduaghan’s remarks reflect a push for national prioritisation of road safety as a public health and infrastructure issue, stressing that meaningful policy changes could save thousands of lives annually. Her intervention underscores the need for cohesive strategies, including enforcement, infrastructure upgrades, and emergency services enhancement, to curb the persistent carnage on major Nigerian roads.
The accident has attracted widespread attention, with Nigeria’s president and state governments offering condolences and confirming that Joshua is in stable condition while hospitalised.
