U.S. congress moves to impose visa ban, asset freeze on Nigerian Miyetti Allah members

The United States Congress is considering legislation to impose targeted sanctions including visa bans and asset freezes on members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and affiliated groups accused of involvement in sectarian violence.

The bipartisan bill, introduced under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability framework, seeks to penalize individuals allegedly responsible for attacks against Christian and minority communities in northern Nigeria. Lawmakers sponsoring the bill claim that MACBAN’s leadership has failed to curb extremist violence carried out under its name, accusing them of abetting impunity through silence.

If enacted, the measure would authorise the U.S. Treasury to block financial transactions and deny travel privileges to targeted individuals. The development follows heightened concern in Washington over religious persecution and insecurity in Nigeria, compounded by recent reports of community clashes and displaced populations.

The Nigerian government has yet to formally respond, though diplomats in Abuja have cautioned against “unilateral conclusions without verified evidence.” Observers say the move could test Nigeria-U.S. relations amid President Trump’s renewed pressure over alleged Christian persecution.
