Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress in Kaduna Central Senatorial District have thrown their weight behind former senator, Shehu Sani, endorsing him as their preferred candidate for the 2027 Senate election.
The endorsement was announced during a strategic meeting of party leaders, local government chairpersons, and senior APC figures held in Kaduna. The gathering brought together influential stakeholders from across the seven local government areas that make up the Kaduna Central zone.
Speaking at the meeting, Kaduna State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sadiq Mamman Lagos, said the endorsement reflected the collective decision of party leaders and grassroots structures within the district.
According to him, the move was based on Shehu Sani’s political experience, popularity, and perceived ability to secure victory for the APC in the next senatorial election.
He clarified, however, that the endorsement does not replace the party’s constitutional process, stressing that APC primaries would still be conducted ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We never said there would not be primaries, but stakeholders in Kaduna Central believe Shehu Sani remains the most credible and politically acceptable candidate,” he stated.
Also addressing party faithful, Kaduna State Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, urged members of the party to remain united behind the decision. He said closer political alignment between Governor Uba Sani and Shehu Sani would accelerate development projects and strengthen representation for the people of Kaduna Central.
The endorsement also received backing from chairpersons of the seven local governments in the zone Chikun, Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Igabi, Birnin Gwari, Ikara, and Kajuru who described Shehu Sani as a long-standing pro-democracy activist with a strong connection to grassroots politics.
Responding to the endorsement, Shehu Sani expressed gratitude to party leaders and supporters, describing the gesture as both an honour and a challenge to serve the people more effectively.
The former lawmaker insisted that the endorsement should not discourage other aspirants from contesting, noting that democracy within the party must be respected.
“The endorsement does not exclude anyone. Whoever is interested should come forward and contest the primaries. I welcome healthy competition,” he said.
Sani also promised improved representation if returned to the Senate, highlighting projects and interventions he facilitated during his previous tenure, particularly in education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and social welfare.
Political observers say the endorsement may strengthen Shehu Sani’s early positioning ahead of the 2027 elections, while also signalling efforts by APC stakeholders in Kaduna Central to consolidate support and avoid internal divisions before the party primaries.
