2027: Makinde Picks Ex-Ajimobi’s Commissioner, Adekambi, As Preferred Successor

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reportedly endorsed former Commissioner for Finance, Abimbola Adekambi, as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

According to the State Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Michael Ogunshina, the decision follows extensive consultations with key political stakeholders and power blocs within Oyo State.

Adekambi, who previously served as Commissioner for Finance under the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, also held roles as Deputy Chief of Staff and currently chairs the Ladoke Akintola International Airport renovation committee.

He later joined the PDP after Makinde’s 2023 re-election, a move that has strengthened his profile within the party structure.

Ogunshina said the governor’s choice reflects confidence in Adekambi’s technical expertise, especially in public finance and administrative management.

Although Governor Makinde has not made a formal public announcement, party insiders say the endorsement has been communicated within PDP leadership circles.

The development has already sparked political discussions across the state, with analysts suggesting it may reshape early alignments ahead of 2027.

Supporters argue that Adekambi represents continuity, competence, and experience-driven governance, while critics warn it could intensify internal competition within the PDP during the primaries.

Political observers say the endorsement places Oyo State on the early radar of Nigeria’s 2027 succession politics, as parties begin strategic positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.
