FAAN Tightens Ebola Surveillance at International Airports Amid Regional Outbreak Concerns

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has intensified health surveillance and screening measures at all international airports across the country following renewed concerns over Ebola outbreaks in parts of Central Africa.

In a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, the agency said it has activated enhanced preventive protocols to safeguard passengers and maintain safe airport operations nationwide.

FAAN explained that it is working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the Port Health Services and other relevant authorities to strengthen passenger screening, particularly for travellers arriving from countries considered high-risk.

The authority said all arriving passengers are now subjected to stricter health checks, including temperature screening and symptom monitoring for Ebola Virus Disease. It added that any suspected case would be immediately isolated and referred for further medical evaluation in line with national and international health regulations.

FAAN also disclosed that it has reinforced emergency response systems at airports, increased staff training on disease detection, and improved coordination among aviation and health agencies to ensure rapid response in the event of any suspected outbreak.

While stressing that no confirmed case of Ebola has been recorded in Nigeria, the agency urged the public to remain calm but vigilant. It encouraged travellers to comply fully with health screening procedures and report any symptoms promptly to health officials.

Health authorities say the measures are part of broader efforts to prevent the importation and spread of infectious diseases through Nigeria’s busy international air travel routes, especially amid ongoing outbreaks in neighbouring regions.
