CAN Demands Stronger Protection for Nigerian Children

The Christian Association of Nigeria has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to take urgent and decisive action to safeguard Nigerian children from growing insecurity, violence, and social hardship across the country.

In a statement marking the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, the association expressed deep concern over the increasing dangers facing children, particularly the recent attacks on schools in Oyo State where pupils and teachers were abducted by gunmen. CAN said the incident has heightened fears among parents and raised serious concerns about the safety of schools and the future of education in Nigeria.

The association noted that many families are now traumatised, with parents increasingly worried about sending their children to school amid worsening insecurity. According to CAN, no child should be forced to learn in fear or become a victim of criminal violence in an environment meant for growth, protection, and hope.

CAN also highlighted the emotional suffering of teachers who were caught in the attacks alongside their pupils, describing educators as guardians and mentors who play critical roles in shaping the future of young Nigerians. The group said the thought of teachers facing danger while protecting students should deeply trouble the conscience of the nation.

Beyond insecurity, the Christian body warned that millions of Nigerian children continue to battle poverty, hunger, child labour, trafficking, abuse, and poor access to quality healthcare and education. It stressed that these challenges are depriving many children of opportunities needed to achieve their full potential.

The association urged governments at all levels to prioritise the protection of schools, strengthen intelligence gathering, and improve security around learning institutions nationwide. CAN also called on parents, traditional rulers, religious groups, media organisations, and community leaders to work together in protecting children and promoting moral values.

The organisation maintained that every attack on schools weakens public confidence, damages national development, and leaves lasting emotional scars on future generations. It added that Nigeria cannot claim to be securing its future if parents and teachers constantly fear for the safety of children.

CAN reaffirmed its commitment to advocating justice, responsible leadership, and policies that promote the welfare, safety, and dignity of every Nigerian child.
