Seyi Makinde has reassured residents of Oyo State that all the pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area on May 16 will be rescued and reunited with their families.
The governor gave the assurance while hosting his deputy, Muslim political appointees, and Islamic leaders at his Ikolaba residence during activities marking the Eid-el-Kabir celebration. Although the gathering focused on the Muslim festival, the governor addressed growing public concern over the recent school abduction, describing the incident as painful and deeply troubling for the state.
Makinde said security agencies and government officials were working tirelessly to secure the release of the victims, adding that efforts were ongoing around the clock to ensure the safe return of the children and their teachers. He also offered prayers for the affected families, asking God to comfort parents and relatives enduring emotional distress.
The governor used the occasion to call for unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence as the country gradually moves into another political season. He warned against attempts to divide residents along ethnic or religious lines, stressing that Oyo State has maintained a long-standing culture of harmony and tolerance among different groups.
According to him, governments and political leaders may change over time, but the peace and stability of the state and the nation must remain a collective priority. He urged residents to support whoever eventually emerges victorious in future elections in the interest of national development and social stability.
Earlier, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, while speaking at the Ibadan Central Praying Ground in Agodi, highlighted the lessons of obedience, sacrifice, and charity associated with Eid-el-Kabir. He said Muslims should emulate Prophet Ibrahim’s submission to God’s command and continue to support one another, especially during difficult times.
Lawal also praised the peaceful atmosphere currently being enjoyed in Oyo State and appealed to residents to continue praying for stability and security across the state.
In his sermon, the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Abdulganiyy Agbotomokekere urged Muslims and political leaders to promote tolerance, patience, and understanding. He warned politicians against inflammatory statements or actions capable of triggering violence as political campaigns approach.
The cleric emphasised that maintaining peace and unity would remain essential to preserving the progress and stability of Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.
