The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed food items to orphans, vulnerable households, and support organisations in Adamawa State as part of efforts to reduce the impact of economic hardship on affected communities.
The distribution exercise took place in Yola on Thursday, where officials of the commission handed over essential food supplies to beneficiary groups under its social welfare and early recovery programme.
Speaking during the event, the Head of Resettlement and Early Recovery at the NEDC, Mr. Lawan Hamidu, said the intervention is part of the commission’s ongoing mandate to support vulnerable populations across the North-East region. He explained that the initiative is routinely carried out whenever the commission identifies urgent humanitarian needs affecting disadvantaged groups.
According to him, the intervention is designed to cushion the effects of rising living costs and other socio-economic challenges confronting households, particularly those already impacted by displacement, poverty, or lack of social support.
“This is part of our regular intervention to support vulnerable persons and ease the impact of prevailing socio-economic challenges,” Hamidu said, adding that sustained humanitarian support is essential for community stability and recovery.
He also called on wealthy individuals, corporate bodies, and charitable organisations to complement government efforts by extending support to the less privileged. He noted that such partnerships would not only improve livelihoods but also promote peace and social cohesion in affected communities.
Also speaking at the event, the NEDC Coordinator in Adamawa State, Mr. Khalifa Lawan, disclosed that more than 150 organisations were targeted to benefit from the distribution exercise. He said the items provided include staple food supplies such as rice, spaghetti, and cooking oil, aimed at meeting immediate household needs.
Lawan urged leaders of beneficiary organisations to ensure transparent and fair distribution of the items to reach the intended vulnerable persons. He stressed that accountability at the community level is crucial to ensuring that the relief effort achieves its purpose.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to continuing humanitarian support programmes across Adamawa and other North-East states, particularly for communities still grappling with economic hardship and the lingering effects of displacement and insecurity.
