OVER 4,000 APPLICANTS COMPETE FOR 550 NURSING, MIDWIFERY POSITIONS IN TARABA

Thousands of healthcare professionals are competing for limited employment opportunities in Taraba State as more than 4,000 applicants have applied for just 550 nursing and midwifery positions approved by the state government.

The recruitment exercise, currently being conducted by the Taraba State Health Service Management Board in Jalingo, has attracted overwhelming interest from qualified nurses and midwives across the state and beyond, highlighting the growing demand for employment within Nigeria’s health sector.

According to officials, the Board opened an online recruitment portal to fill vacancies approved by the state government as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and address manpower shortages in hospitals and primary healthcare facilities. Within a short period, over 4,000 applications were received, significantly exceeding the available number of positions.

The recruitment process includes rigorous screening, professional assessments, and competency-based interviews designed to ensure that only qualified and capable healthcare workers are selected. Authorities say the exercise is aimed at improving the quality of healthcare services available to residents while enhancing the state’s medical workforce.

Speaking during the screening exercise, Executive Secretary of the Health Service Management Board, Dr. Garba Danjuma, described the large number of applications as evidence of the growing need for employment opportunities among health professionals.

He emphasized that despite the intense competition, recruitment would be based strictly on competence, qualifications, and professional standards.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Budiya Buma, reiterated the commitment of Governor Agbu Kefas to revitalizing the state’s healthcare system through strategic investments in personnel, infrastructure, and service delivery. He assured applicants and the public that the process would remain transparent, fair, and free from undue influence.

Chairman of the Board, Dr. Ebenezer Apake, explained that the screening and interview process is expected to last between two and three days and is focused primarily on recruiting nurses and midwives who will be deployed to various health facilities across the state.

Health sector observers say the overwhelming response underscores both the shortage of employment opportunities and the increasing number of trained healthcare professionals seeking stable careers in public service. They note that strengthening the workforce is critical to improving maternal and child healthcare, reducing patient-to-nurse ratios, and expanding access to quality medical services, particularly in rural communities.

Successful candidates will be recommended for employment and integrated into the state’s healthcare system, where they are expected to help address staffing gaps and improve patient care. The Board has also pledged to prioritize staff welfare, career development, training opportunities, and regular promotions as part of efforts to retain skilled healthcare workers.

The recruitment drive forms part of broader reforms aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery in Taraba State and ensuring that hospitals and clinics are adequately staffed to meet the growing healthcare needs of the population. With only 550 positions available from more than 4,000 applications, the exercise remains one of the most competitive health-sector recruitment processes witnessed in the state in recent years.
