FG Launches Digital TV Rollout, Targets 40 Million Homes and N600 Billion Economic Boost

The Federal Government has officially launched Nigeria’s long-awaited Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme, marking a major step in the country’s transition from analogue television broadcasting to a fully digital broadcasting ecosystem. The initiative is expected to provide digital television services to approximately 40 million households nationwide while generating more than N600 billion in economic opportunities across multiple sectors.

The launch ceremony, held in Abuja, represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda after years of planning, policy adjustments, and implementation delays. Government officials described the rollout as a critical component of efforts to modernise the country’s communications infrastructure, expand access to information, and accelerate economic growth in the digital era.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, said the Digital Switch Over programme aligns with the government’s broader vision of building a technology-driven economy capable of achieving long-term sustainable growth. He noted that improved digital connectivity and access to information remain essential pillars in Nigeria’s ambition to develop a one-trillion-dollar economy.

According to the minister, the DSO programme will significantly improve access to educational, cultural, entertainment, and informational content across the country. He emphasized that one of the key objectives of the initiative is to ensure that residents of rural and underserved communities benefit from quality digital broadcasting services, thereby reducing the information gap between urban and rural populations.

The Director-General of the , , described the project as much more than a broadcasting upgrade. He explained that the transition creates an entirely new communications architecture that will stimulate growth across various industries, including media, technology, manufacturing, advertising, and creative content production.

Ebuebu stated that the digital broadcasting ecosystem will create fresh opportunities for broadcasters, filmmakers, content creators, software developers, equipment manufacturers, and investors. He added that the transition would encourage greater media diversity, provide viewers with more channel options, and improve the efficient use of valuable radio frequency spectrum resources.

Also speaking at the launch, Managing Director of , , highlighted the economic benefits expected from the initiative. She noted that the programme would stimulate job creation across the broadcasting value chain, boost advertising revenues, and support entrepreneurship within Nigeria’s growing digital economy.

She explained that viewers would benefit from superior picture quality, clearer audio transmission, and access to a wider range of television channels and interactive services. The digital platform is also expected to improve viewer experience by offering more reliable signal reception and enhanced content delivery.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, , described the launch as the culmination of years of collaboration between government agencies, regulators, broadcasters, and industry stakeholders. He noted that a fully operational digital broadcasting environment would encourage local content production, increase audience reach, support indigenous manufacturers, and create new streams of revenue for media organisations.

According to him, the transition is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s creative and entertainment industries by providing local producers with greater visibility and wider distribution channels. This, he said, would contribute to economic diversification while promoting Nigerian culture and creativity both domestically and internationally.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, , stressed the importance of digital infrastructure in modern economies. He argued that digital connectivity has become just as important as roads, electricity, railways, and seaports in driving national development and global competitiveness.

Industry experts believe the Digital Switch Over programme could transform Nigeria’s broadcasting landscape by creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs in content production, equipment manufacturing, technical services, software development, marketing, and telecommunications. The initiative is also expected to attract private-sector investments and strengthen Nigeria’s position within Africa’s rapidly expanding digital economy.

Beyond television broadcasting, analysts note that the improved spectrum efficiency resulting from digital migration could free up valuable frequencies for broadband expansion, telecommunications services, and emerging digital technologies. This could further accelerate internet penetration and support the growth of innovation-driven industries.

As implementation begins nationwide, government officials expressed confidence that the Digital Switch Over programme will not only enhance the quality of television broadcasting but also serve as a catalyst for economic growth, digital inclusion, technological advancement, and national development.

With a target of reaching 40 million homes and unlocking over N600 billion in economic value, the initiative represents one of Nigeria’s most ambitious digital infrastructure projects and signals a new chapter in the country’s journey toward a fully digital future.
