The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed four senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force after they were found guilty of gross misconduct, unprofessional behaviour, and actions considered unbecoming of public officers.
The disciplinary action was announced by the Chairman of the Commission, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Argungu, shortly after the PSC’s plenary meeting in Abuja.
Argungu said the Commission sanctioned a total of 31 senior officers in one of its latest disciplinary exercises aimed at strengthening accountability and professionalism within the police force.
According to him, 10 officers were demoted to lower ranks. Three Superintendents of Police (SPs) were reduced to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), while two Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) were demoted to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). Five Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) were also reduced to the rank of Inspector.
In addition to the dismissals and demotions, the Commission ordered the compulsory retirement of two officers in what it described as being in the public interest.
Several other officers also received disciplinary measures. Ten officers were issued severe reprimands, five received reprimands, three were handed warning letters, while one officer was given a letter of advice.
However, not all the cases resulted in punishment. Argungu disclosed that seven officers investigated by the Commission were cleared after they were found not guilty of any wrongdoing.
Reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to discipline, the PSC chairman said the current leadership would maintain a zero-tolerance policy against misconduct within the Nigeria Police Force.
He stressed that officers who violate the Force’s rules and professional standards should expect appropriate sanctions, while those who demonstrate dedication and outstanding service will continue to receive recognition and rewards.
“The current Board of the PSC under my watch will not condone any form of misconduct by police officers,” Argungu said, adding that the Commission remains committed to promoting professionalism, integrity, and public confidence in the nation’s police force.
The latest disciplinary action comes as the PSC continues efforts to improve accountability within the Nigeria Police Force by ensuring that officers who breach established standards are held responsible for their actions.
