ABUJA, Nigeria — Senator Abdul Ningi has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt a tougher diplomatic stance against South Africa following the continued attacks and killings of Nigerians living in the country.
The lawmaker made the call during a Senate debate on the recent deaths of two Nigerians in South Africa, expressing concern over what he described as the recurring targeting of Nigerian citizens.
Ningi Demands Stronger Government Response
Senator Ningi criticised the Federal Government’s handling of the situation, urging the Tinubu administration to suspend diplomatic relations with South Africa until concrete measures are taken to protect Nigerians.
According to him, Nigeria must send a clear message that the repeated attacks, hostility and killings of its citizens abroad will no longer be tolerated.
He argued that stronger diplomatic action was necessary to demonstrate the country’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and rights of Nigerians wherever they reside.
Calls for Protection of Nigerians Abroad
The senator stressed the need for the Federal Government to prioritise the safety of its citizens and engage South African authorities to ensure justice for victims and improved security for Nigerians living in the country.
His remarks come amid renewed concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, where several incidents involving attacks on foreign nationals have sparked diplomatic tensions in recent years.
The Federal Government has yet to officially respond to Senator Ningi’s proposal to suspend diplomatic relations with South Africa.
