NYSC Introduces Mandatory NERD Clearance for Prospective Corps Members

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that prospective corps members must obtain National Electronic Registration Database (NERD) clearance before they can be mobilised for national service.

The directive, issued as preparations continue for the next orientation exercise, makes the clearance process a compulsory requirement for all eligible graduates seeking participation in the scheme.

In a notice shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the NYSC urged prospective corps members to complete the NERD clearance process as early as possible to avoid delays in mobilisation.

According to the scheme, candidates who fail to obtain the required clearance will not be eligible for deployment into the National Youth Service programme.

“NERD clearance is compulsory for all prospective corps members. No NERD clearance, no NYSC,” the scheme stated.

Although the NYSC did not provide detailed information on how the clearance process works, the new requirement signals a tighter verification process aimed at improving the credibility of the mobilisation system.

The announcement comes shortly after the scheme began mobilisation activities for the 2026 Batch ‘B’ service year, urging tertiary institutions and graduating students to complete all necessary documentation ahead of the orientation camp.

The latest directive also follows a recent safety advisory in which the NYSC cautioned prospective corps members against travelling at night while reporting to orientation camps.

The scheme advised those embarking on long-distance journeys to stop over in safe locations when necessary or seek accommodation at designated military or security formations instead of travelling after dark.

The NYSC said the measures are part of its broader efforts to strengthen the integrity of the mobilisation process while improving the safety and welfare of prospective corps members amid ongoing security concerns across the country.

With mobilisation activities already underway, eligible graduates are expected to complete all required registration, verification and clearance procedures—including the newly introduced NERD clearance—before reporting to their assigned orientation camps.
