The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed that a group of Nigerian girls who were detained in Mauritius have been released following diplomatic intervention and are on their way home.
The commission announced the development in a statement issued by its Digital Media Unit after a viral video showing the girls in detention sparked widespread concern on social media.
The video alleged that the girls had been held at Mauritius airport since July 31, prompting calls for the Nigerian government to intervene.
According to NiDCOM, the girls have now been released and travelled to Nairobi, Kenya, where arrangements were made for their onward journey to Nigeria.
The commission said their release followed several days of diplomatic engagement between Nigerian authorities and officials in Mauritius aimed at resolving the matter.
NiDCOM also disclosed that its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, remained in close contact with the Nigerian Embassy throughout the process. The embassy formally engaged the Mauritian authorities to secure the girls’ release, seek accountability over the incident and help prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The commission described the development as a relief for the families of the affected girls, who had been anxiously awaiting their safe return to Nigeria.
