The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State has criticised popular Hausa political musician Dauda Kahutu Rarara over remarks made about its governorship candidate, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, in a recently released song.
In a statement issued by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Abdulkadir Ahmad Dukku, the PDP described the lyrics as defamatory, disrespectful and inconsistent with the principles of healthy democratic engagement.
PDP Condemns Personal Attacks
The opposition party argued that political rivalry should never be used as an excuse to attack an individual’s reputation or dignity.
According to the statement, Prof. Pantami, an Islamic scholar and university professor, deserves respect regardless of political affiliation.
“The song is defamatory and a disgrace to the nation’s cultural values and democratic ideals. Public figures deserve respect, and their dignity should be protected,” the party stated.
Links Remarks to Previous Criticism
The PDP also claimed Rarara has a history of making controversial comments about prominent political figures, including the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The party further suggested that the latest song may have been influenced by its earlier criticism of the Gombe State Government over reports that the musician received vehicles, plots of land and cash gifts valued at more than ₦200 million.
According to the PDP, it still considers the reported gifts an unjustifiable use of public resources.
Calls for Issue-Based Campaigns
While acknowledging the role musicians and entertainers play in political campaigns, the party cautioned against using music to launch personal attacks or inflame political tensions.
The PDP urged political leaders to encourage civility among their supporters and focus on ideas rather than insults as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
According to the party, election campaigns should centre on policies, governance and development instead of personal attacks that could deepen divisions among citizens.
