From Katsina to Belarus: 8 Young Football Talents Chase Their Pro Dreams

Eight promising young footballers from the Katsina State Football Academy have left Nigeria for a one-month intensive training programme in Belarus, marking a major step forward in their pursuit of professional football careers.

The players are set to train at FC Torpedo Zhodino-BelAZ in Minsk, where they will be exposed to international coaching methods, modern training techniques and the demands of professional football.

Their opportunity came after they emerged as some of the standout talents at the Malam Dikko Umaru Radda Scouting Tournament 2.0, held across Katsina State from May 29 to June 4, 2026.

The tournament was established to identify talented young footballers from all 34 local government areas of the state and provide them with opportunities to develop their careers beyond Nigeria.

Chairman of the Katsina State Football Academy, Ahmed Mohammed, praised Governor Dikko Umaru Radda for supporting the initiative and described him as “The Ultimate Playmaker” for his commitment to grassroots sports development.

According to Mohammed, the Belarus training camp could prove to be a turning point for the young players, with some potentially earning professional contracts with FC Torpedo Zhodino-BelAZ if they impress during the programme.

The first batch of players to travel includes 18-year-olds Abdullahi Aliyu and Alhassan Muhammad Shariff, as well as 20-year-old Ismail Nuhu.

Other selected players are expected to join them in Minsk in the coming days as part of subsequent batches.

The overseas programme is part of Katsina State’s wider strategy to expose its young footballers to international football standards while creating pathways into professional football.

Beyond improving their technical abilities, the initiative is expected to give the players valuable international experience and an opportunity to showcase their talents to clubs outside Nigeria.

For the young footballers, the Belarus trip represents more than just a training camp. It is an opportunity to take their first major step towards turning their football dreams into professional careers.

The Katsina State Government also hopes the initiative will strengthen the state’s reputation as a producer of football talent while using sports to create opportunities, employment and international exposure for young people.
