Paris Saint-Germain began their new campaign with another European trophy after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg, Austria, on Wednesday.
Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain have added another piece of silverware to their growing collection after overcoming Europa League winners Aston Villa in a thrilling UEFA Super Cup encounter.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring for the French champions before Villa teenager Brian Madjo equalised just before half-time. Désiré Doué restored PSG’s lead in the second half, with Luis Enrique’s side holding firm to secure the trophy.
The victory means PSG have successfully defended the Super Cup they won 12 months ago against Tottenham Hotspur.
The match brought together the winners of Europe’s two major club competitions and was officiated by Somali referee Omar Artan.
Kvaratskhelia Sets PSG in Front
Aston Villa created the first real opportunity when Boubacar Kamara tested PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov with a long-range effort in the 13th minute.
PSG soon responded.
After Marco Bizot denied an initial attempt, the French champions recovered possession and worked the ball toward Kvaratskhelia on the left. The Georgian winger cut inside and fired a powerful shot into the near corner to give PSG the lead in the 20th minute.
Kvaratskhelia continued to cause problems for Villa, almost setting up Nuno Mendes shortly afterwards with a dangerous cut-back.
Villa, however, survived the pressure and gradually found their way back into the contest.
Teenage Madjo Levels the Match
Seventeen-year-old Brian Madjo came close to equalising when he headed a John McGinn cross narrowly wide.
The teenager would not have to wait long for another opportunity.
With the first half approaching its conclusion, McGinn once again found Madjo inside the penalty area. This time, the young striker made no mistake, smashing his left-footed effort into the roof of the net to make it 1-1.
The goal marked a memorable debut for Madjo on a major European stage.
Doué Delivers the Winner
Villa continued to threaten after the restart, with McGinn forcing another save from Safonov with a curling effort.
But PSG regained control and eventually found the decisive goal in the 61st minute.
Désiré Doué raced into the Villa area and curled the ball into the net. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but VAR overturned the decision after determining that Villa defender Matty Cash had played Doué onside.
The goal was awarded, giving PSG a 2-1 advantage.
Villa immediately searched for another equaliser, but Safonov produced a strong save to deny 19-year-old George Hemmings.
PSG then defended their advantage as Villa pushed forward, with Warren Zaïre-Emery also making an important intervention to prevent a Boubacar Kamara effort from threatening the French side.
Luis Enrique introduced Fabian Ruiz with 15 minutes remaining as PSG looked to strengthen their midfield and protect their lead.
Villa’s best opportunity to level came late in the game when Tammy Abraham narrowly failed to connect with Alysson’s cut-back inside the six-yard box.
PSG ultimately held on to secure another European trophy.
The victory gives the Ligue 1 champions an early boost as they begin their domestic campaign, with the club now setting their sights on an even bigger target: winning a third consecutive Champions League title.
