Angelique Kidjo Makes History As First African Musician To Receive Hollywood Star

The five-time Grammy winner is being honoured for her decades-long contribution to music and her influence on audiences around the world.

Beninese music icon Angelique Kidjo is set to make history as the first African musician and first Black African to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The five-time Grammy winner will be honoured on Tuesday in Los Angeles, marking another major milestone in a career that has spanned more than four decades.

Born in Benin, Kidjo has established herself as one of Africa’s most influential international musicians. Her work has earned global recognition, with Time magazine previously describing her as “Africa’s premier diva.”

Hollywood Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez praised the singer’s lasting impact on music and culture.

“Angelique Kidjo’s extraordinary artistry and global influence have inspired audiences across generations and continents,” Martinez said.

She added that the honour recognises Kidjo’s “remarkable contributions to music and culture around the world.”

A Landmark Achievement

The 66-year-old musician will be joined at the ceremony by Oscar-nominated American actor Willem Dafoe and record producer Harvey Mason Jr.

Kidjo, who has consistently used her platform to promote African music and culture internationally, described the honour as a milestone she hopes will open the door for other African artists.

“I may be the first African female singer to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but I am convinced that I will not be the last,” she said when the honour was announced last year.

“Many others will follow, and that fills my heart with joy.”

Kidjo’s Hollywood recognition adds to an extraordinary list of achievements that includes five Grammy Awards and more than 40 years of international music success.

Her star will make her the first African musician and first Black African to receive the prestigious Hollywood Walk of Fame honour.
