Katsina Set for Polo Showdown as 20+ Clubs Storm City for 2026 Tournament

Katsina is set for a week of fast-paced action as more than 20 of Nigeria’s leading polo clubs converge on the ancient city for the 2026 Katsina International Polo Tournament.

The prestigious tournament will take place from August 22 to 29 at the Usman Nagogo Polo Ground, with top players from across the country expected to battle for a collection of highly coveted trophies.

The event is expected to attract clubs from Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Yola, Jos and Bauchi, setting the stage for an exciting contest among some of the country’s best polo teams.

Organisers Promise a Bigger Spectacle

President of Katsina Polo Club, Alhaji Sanusi Kabir Usman, said preparations were in full swing for this year’s competition.

The tournament follows the 2025 edition, which coincided with celebrations marking the centenary of the Nigeria Polo Association, established in 1925 by the late Emir of Katsina, Sir Usman Nagogo.

Katsina Polo Club Chairman, Muhammadu Usman Sarki, and Tournament Manager, Umar Kabir, said the organising committee was determined to deliver an event that would match the grandeur of the centenary celebrations while surpassing previous editions.

Nigerian Cup Takes Centre Stage

The prestigious Nigerian Cup will headline the list of trophies at stake during the week-long tournament.

The cup itself has a remarkable history, having marked its centenary two years ago and remaining one of the most prized trophies in Nigerian polo.

Another major attraction is the General Hassan Usman Katsina Cup, instituted in honour of the first African appointed to the Federation of International Polo.

Competitors will also battle for other major prizes, including the:

Muhammadu Dikko Memorial Cup
President’s Cup
Governor’s Cup
Wazirin Katsina Cup
Muhammadu Buhari Cup
Talba Cup
Can Katsina Teams Repeat Last Year’s Success?

The home teams will enter the competition with confidence after dominating several major categories at last year’s tournament.

Katsina Max Air, Katsina Aldusar, Katsina Danmarna and Mangal Cement were among the teams that walked away with top honours in the previous edition.

However, with more than 20 clubs expected this year, the competition promises to be tougher, with visiting teams eager to challenge Katsina’s dominance on home turf.

With the horses ready and top polo players preparing for battle, all roads lead to the Usman Nagogo Polo Ground from August 22 to 29 for what promises to be another spectacular celebration of Nigerian polo.

Katsina is ready. The horses are ready. The trophy hunt is about to begin.
