The veteran Yoruba actor died at 66 after battling stage-four cancer, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Nigeria’s film and cultural industry.
Ogun and Lagos States have joined family, colleagues and fans in mourning the death of veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
The renowned actor died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the age of 66 following a battle with stage-four cancer.
The Ogun State Government described his death as a major loss to the state, Nigeria’s creative industry and the country at large.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the government praised Ogogo for his remarkable talent and contribution to the promotion of Yoruba culture.
The government said the Ilaro-born actor used his career in theatre, film and television to preserve and showcase Yoruba language, traditions and values to audiences in Nigeria and beyond.
It also described him as a disciplined and humble professional whose work earned him admiration from colleagues, fans and generations of Nigerians.
According to the state government, Ogogo’s death has created a painful void that will be felt by his family, the people of Ilaro and Ogun State, as well as the wider Nigerian creative community.
Lagos Government Pays Tribute
The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture also expressed grief over the actor’s passing, describing him as a custodian of culture and a gifted storyteller.
In a statement by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the ministry said Ogogo played an important role in promoting Yoruba heritage through his decades-long career.
The commissioner noted that his contributions to theatre, film and entertainment helped shape Nigeria’s cultural landscape and would continue to inspire younger generations.
“Taiwo Hassan was more than an actor. He was a custodian of culture, a gifted storyteller, and a proud ambassador of Yoruba heritage,” the statement said.
Daughter Confirms Death
Ogogo’s daughter, Kira Hassan, confirmed his death during an emotional Instagram Live session.
Struggling to hold back tears, she told viewers, “My daddy is dead. I can’t believe it.”
Kira, who was surrounded by family members during the broadcast, also appealed for assistance to return home and join her family for her father’s burial.
A family friend later confirmed the actor’s death, while veteran actor Jide Kosoko also separately confirmed the development.
Ogogo’s death came just days after his family revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage-four cancer.
His passing has since sparked an outpouring of tributes from Nollywood stars, friends, fans and other members of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Beyond his roles on screen, Ogogo will be remembered for using his craft to promote Yoruba culture and contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s creative industry.
