Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has raised alarm over the state of democracy in Nigeria, declaring that the system is gradually dying under the current political climate.
Speaking during a public forum in Accra, Obi said the increasing erosion of democratic values, disregard for the rule of law, and the worsening economic crisis have left ordinary Nigerians disillusioned. He added that the recent political crises, including the imposition of emergency rule in Rivers State, point to the shrinking space for democratic participation.
Obi called for urgent reforms to restore confidence in the country’s institutions, strengthen electoral integrity, and protect citizens’ rights. He also urged Nigerians in the diaspora to remain engaged in the struggle for good governance at home, noting that their voices can influence international opinion and pressure leaders to do better.
His comments have generated intense debate back home, with supporters hailing him as a consistent defender of democracy, while critics accused him of exaggerating Nigeria’s challenges for political gain
