The Council of State has given its approval to President Tinubu’s nominee for the Chairmanship of the National Population Commission (NPC), signaling broad institutional backing for the appointment. Concurrently, the Council granted presidential pardons to 82 prisoners, as part of its traditional executive clemency functions.
The NPC nomination was one of several items on the Council’s agenda. With the approval secured, the President is expected to forward the candidate’s name to the Senate for confirmation.
Meanwhile, the pardon of 82 prisoners includes individuals convicted of minor offenses and those recommended for mercy. The decision was defended as a humanitarian and symbolic gesture of reconciliation, especially ahead of national milestones.
