The Federal Government has announced termination of the contract for the Port Harcourt–Aba road, citing serious performance lapses and unacceptable delays by the contractor. The decision, communicated through the relevant federal ministry, follows field inspections and repeated warnings issued to the contractor over months.
Government sources said the termination aims to protect public funds and ensure that the long-anticipated road project — critical for regional commerce and connectivity — is completed under a contractor with the capacity to deliver. Authorities indicated the ministry is beginning an expedited process to re-tender the remaining work and assess claims and liabilities arising from the contract termination.
Local traders and commuters welcomed the move but appealed for speed and transparency in selecting a replacement contractor to avoid further disruption. Federal officials said they will issue more details on the transition plan, financial arrangements and timelines once legal and procurement clearances are finalised.
