The Federal Government has clarified that Mathematics remains a compulsory subject for O-Level students sitting the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and other recognized O-Level credentials. The clarification follows public queries and circulating reports suggesting possible curriculum changes at the national level.
Education ministry officials emphasised that mathematics is foundational for STEM education, technical training and many professional pathways, and therefore will continue to be required for certification. They also noted ongoing curriculum reviews aimed at improving pedagogy and the teaching of numeracy, rather than removing key subjects.
School administrators and teachers welcomed the reaffirmation, saying it gives clarity for exam preparation and curriculum planning. Meanwhile, ministry officials said targeted teacher training and resource allocation are being prioritised to help raise attainment in mathematics across junior and senior secondary schools.
