The Kebbi State Government has directed the immediate shutdown of all tertiary institutions as a precautionary response to escalating banditry threats. The order affects universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and specialized institutions across the state.
Officials say the decision followed intelligence assessments indicating that learning centers with large student populations may be targeted by criminal groups. The closure is expected to last until a joint security audit, involving the police, military, and DSS, determines that campuses are safe.
Students have criticised the abrupt shutdown, warning that academic disruptions may worsen unemployment and educational decline in the Northwest. Government representatives, however, insist that safeguarding lives must remain the overriding priority.
