Abia State Governor Alex Otti has approved the appointment of Deutsch Detchoua Gustave Emmanuel as the new head coach of Enyimba International Football Club, signalling a decisive response to the club’s recent decline in performance. The decision comes as the state government moves to reinvigorate the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) powerhouse and restore its competitive edge both domestically and on the continent.
The appointment of Coach Emmanuel, a tactician with extensive experience and multiple CAF coaching licences, was confirmed by the Abia State Commissioner for Information. The selection is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the club’s technical direction, enhance professionalism and lay a solid foundation for sustainable success.
Enyimba, historically one of Nigeria’s most decorated clubs with multiple domestic titles and two CAF Champions League triumphs, has struggled to reach its traditional standards in recent seasons. The state administration attributes this dip in form to technical challenges and limited competitive momentum, prompting the leadership change.
Coach Emmanuel’s résumé includes head coaching and technical advisory roles at reputable clubs in Nigeria and Cameroon, and he was recently recognised as Nigeria National League Best Coach in 2025. His appointment reflects the government’s confidence that seasoned leadership will be key to rebuilding the club’s tactical identity and improving results.
The coaching change follows a brief tenure by the previous coach, whose time in charge saw mixed results on the pitch. Team backers and sporting authorities said the move is aimed at refocusing the squad’s performance ahead of the ongoing NPFL campaign and other competitions.
