Anger erupts into protests in Cameroon after Paul Biya Re-Election

Widespread protests broke out in multiple cities across Cameroon following the announcement that President Paul Biya had secured an eighth term in office. In Douala, residents erected barricades, set fires, and clashed with security forces demanding transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

The Constitutional Council confirmed Biya’s victory, extending his decades-long hold on power since 1982. His opponents, led by Issa Tchiroma Bakary, have disputed the results, alleging fraud, suppression of dissent, and manipulation.

Authorities responded by deploying armed forces to hotspots and enforcing curfews in some districts. At least four people were reported killed during confrontations in Douala as tensions escalated ahead of the official announcement.

In the midst of the unrest, two opposition figures endorsing Tchiroma were detained by security operatives, further fueling allegations of political persecution.

Observers note that the protests reflect a deeper frustration among Cameroonians with long-standing authoritarian tendencies, inadequate political reforms, and generational calls for accountability. The outcome and aftermath of this election will be closely watched across Africa.
