Atiku Plans U.S. Visit Ahead of 2027 Elections, Raises Concerns Over Nigeria’s State

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has confirmed plans to visit the United States ahead of the 2027 election cycle, citing concerns over Nigeria’s security, governance, and economic challenges.

Speaking through his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku said the trip is driven by what he described as the “alarming deterioration” of conditions in the country. He characterised the situation as a “full-blown internal crisis,” pointing to persistent violence in the North-West, North-East, and Middle Belt regions.

On the economy, Atiku highlighted rising inflation, a weakened naira, and declining purchasing power, noting that many Nigerians are facing severe hardship. He also warned that eroding public confidence in governance and the electoral process could threaten national stability.

Addressing criticism of international engagement, Atiku maintained that discussing Nigeria’s challenges globally is not unpatriotic, but rather necessary in a connected world.

He stressed that while leadership decisions remain the prerogative of Nigerians, global partners have a legitimate interest in the country’s stability and democratic health.

In a message to the administration of Bola Tinubu, Atiku urged a reassessment of priorities to tackle insecurity and economic decline, emphasising that leadership demands accountability and results.

He also called on Nigerians to remain engaged and demand transparency, stating that meaningful change must come through collective national resolve.

Atiku previously visited the United States in 2019 and 2022 during his presidential campaigns under the Peoples Democratic Party, where he met with U.S. officials, business leaders, and members of the Nigerian diaspora.
