Barcelona have finally reached an agreement with Manchester City to sign Spanish midfielder Rodri, ending weeks of negotiations over the World Cup winner.
A source from the Catalan club confirmed on Sunday that a deal had been reached, with reports putting the transfer fee at around €75 million ($87 million).
The club is expected to officially announce the signing in the coming days.
Barca Beat Competition For Rodri
Barcelona had reportedly seen two offers for Rodri rejected by Manchester City before eventually reaching an agreement.
The 30-year-old had also attracted interest from Real Madrid following Spain’s World Cup triumph in July, but Barcelona moved aggressively to secure his signature.
Rodri joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2019 and quickly established himself as one of the most important players in Pep Guardiola’s midfield.
World Cup Hero Returns To Spain
The midfielder played a key role in Spain’s successful World Cup campaign and was among the standout performers as La Roja lifted the trophy.
Rodri, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2024, has also been central to Manchester City’s success over the past several years.
During his time at the Etihad, he helped City win the 2023 Champions League, four Premier League titles and a total of 12 major trophies.
However, injuries have limited his involvement over the past two seasons.
De Jong Injury Opens Door For Rodri
Barcelona’s decision to pursue Rodri was accelerated by an injury to Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who is expected to spend several months on the sidelines.
The Spanish champions see Rodri as a major addition to their midfield as they prepare for the new campaign.
The move also represents a major return to Spain for Rodri, who previously spent time at Villarreal and Atletico Madrid before moving to England.
More Barcelona Deals On The Way
Rodri is set to become one of several major additions to Barcelona’s squad this summer.
The Catalan giants have already brought in Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Jesse Bisiwu, according to the report.
Barcelona are also expected to complete a deal for Joao Cancelo in the coming days after the Portuguese defender spent last season on loan at the club from Al Hilal.
With Rodri now set to arrive, Barcelona are building a formidable squad as they look to defend their domestic title and challenge for European glory.
