CBN Reshuffles Deputy Governors in Major Leadership Reorganization

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has redeployed its four Deputy Governors in a significant internal restructuring aimed at strengthening leadership coordination and improving operational efficiency across key departments of the apex bank.

The changes, which took effect on June 1, 2026, were reflected in an updated organisational profile published on the bank’s official website. Although the CBN has not issued an official statement detailing the rationale behind the redeployment, the move is widely interpreted as part of ongoing reforms to enhance policy delivery and institutional effectiveness.

Under the new arrangement, Dr. Muhammad Abdullahi, previously Deputy Governor in charge of Economic Policy, has been moved to the Corporate Services Directorate. In turn, Mr. Philip Ikeazor has been reassigned from Corporate Services to head the Economic Policy Directorate, placing him in charge of macroeconomic analysis, monetary policy formulation and key economic assessments that guide interest rate and inflation decisions.

Similarly, Ms. Emem Usoro, who previously oversaw Corporate Services, has been redeployed to the Operations Directorate, which manages currency circulation, payment systems and other core central banking functions. Mr. Lamido Yuguda, formerly in Operations, has been transferred to the Financial System Stability Directorate, where he will now oversee risk monitoring and regulatory safeguards within the banking sector.

The redeployment effectively reshapes the leadership structure of departments central to Nigeria’s financial governance, including policy formulation, banking supervision, institutional administration and operational execution.

Analysts say the changes may be intended to improve coordination between directorates at a time when the CBN is implementing broader reforms aimed at stabilising the economy, strengthening regulatory oversight and restoring confidence in the financial system.

The Economic Policy Directorate plays a critical role in tracking inflation trends, analysing economic indicators and guiding monetary policy direction, while the Corporate Services Directorate handles internal administration and institutional support functions. The Operations Directorate is responsible for day-to-day central banking operations, including currency management, while the Financial System Stability Directorate focuses on safeguarding the resilience of Nigeria’s banking and financial sector.

The reshuffle also comes amid wider leadership adjustments within the financial sector. In March 2026, President Bola Tinubu nominated former Securities and Exchange Commission Director-General, Lamido Yuguda, as a Deputy Governor of the CBN following earlier changes in the bank’s leadership structure.

Observers note that the latest redeployment underscores efforts by the apex bank to align leadership roles with evolving economic priorities and to ensure more effective implementation of monetary and financial policies across all directorates.
