Defence Minister Warns Against Electing Criminal-Minded Leaders, Says Security Situation Improving

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd), has warned Nigerians against electing what he described as “criminal-minded individuals” into political leadership, saying the country’s progress depends on credible and visionary leaders at all levels.

Speaking in Abuja after the commissioning of the annex branch of Haam Legal Consult Services, the Defence Minister said Nigeria’s security situation is gradually improving under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, even though challenges remain.

He explained that the Federal Government has continued to strengthen the Armed Forces through increased support, equipment, and coordination, which he said has improved the military’s ability to respond to threats across the country.

Musa also noted that Nigeria is working closely with international partners, including the United States and other allied nations, to combat insecurity and strengthen intelligence sharing.

According to him, lasting security cannot be achieved by the military alone, stressing that citizens must also play a key role by refusing to support or shield criminal elements in their communities.

He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, adding that many criminal networks thrive because of local collaboration and silence.

The Defence Minister further emphasized the importance of responsible voting, warning against electoral choices based on ethnicity, religion, or sentiment. He also cautioned against vote-buying and voter apathy, describing them as threats to national development.

“We do not need criminal-minded individuals in leadership positions,” he said, adding that the country would experience faster progress with purposeful and patriotic leadership.

Musa also commended the establishment of the legal firm, praising young lawyers contributing to the justice system and public service, while encouraging professionalism in legal practice.

He reiterated that with stronger leadership, civic responsibility, and improved security collaboration, Nigeria can overcome its current security challenges.
