A diphtheria outbreak in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State has claimed 15 lives, with 117 suspected cases recorded across several communities.
Local health authorities described the outbreak as alarming, warning that the number of infections could rise as surveillance and investigations continue.
Baks Bulus, the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer for Jos North, disclosed the figures on Tuesday, saying the deaths were recorded within three days of the outbreak.
According to Bulus, diphtheria is a bacterial infection that can spread through close contact with an infected person, including through shared household items such as utensils and towels.
He warned that children who have not been fully vaccinated are particularly vulnerable to severe complications.
Health Officials Urge Vaccination
Bulus stressed that diphtheria is a vaccine-preventable disease and urged parents to ensure their children receive the recommended doses.
Residents in affected communities were also advised to maintain proper hygiene, avoid overcrowded places and take precautions when caring for suspected patients.
The health official urged anyone experiencing symptoms or who may have come into contact with an infected person to seek medical attention promptly.
He also warned residents against self-medication and advised them to visit primary healthcare centres for proper assessment and treatment.
LGC Deploys Health Workers
The Jos North Local Government Council has deployed health personnel to affected communities to raise awareness and educate residents about the disease and ways of preventing its spread.
The latest development came just days after a family in Jos reportedly lost two children, aged between 12 and 17, to the infection.
With 15 deaths and 117 suspected cases already recorded, health officials are intensifying efforts to contain the outbreak and prevent further loss of lives.
