DLA Condemns Revocation of Sowore’s Bail, Warns Against Threats to Democratic Freedom

The Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) has criticised the revocation of the bail granted to African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, warning that his incarceration could have far-reaching implications for freedom of expression and democratic participation in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its National Chairman, Samuel M. Memeh, the party said it received the outcome of the recent court proceedings involving Sowore with “profound concern,” stressing that while it respects the authority and independence of the judiciary, it disagrees with the decision that resulted in the activist’s imprisonment.

According to the alliance, the circumstances surrounding the case raise important questions about democratic tolerance, proportionality and the protection of dissenting voices in a constitutional democracy. The party maintained that differences in political opinion should not be interpreted as threats to national stability and warned that actions perceived as targeting opposition figures could weaken public confidence in democratic institutions.

“The Democratic Leadership Alliance respectfully disagrees with the decision that resulted in Mr. Sowore’s incarceration,” the statement said, adding that citizens have a right to express views critical of government policies without fear of intimidation or repression.

The DLA noted that the development comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with multiple challenges, including rising insecurity, kidnapping, terrorism, unemployment, economic hardship and increasing poverty. It questioned why one of the country’s most outspoken activists and opposition figures should be behind bars over issues linked to political expression and criticism of government actions.

According to the party, many Nigerians are likely to interpret the revocation of Sowore’s bail as evidence of a shrinking democratic space, where dissenting opinions and criticisms are increasingly viewed with suspicion. It warned that such perceptions could deepen concerns about the health of democracy and undermine confidence in institutions responsible for safeguarding civil liberties.

The alliance stressed that democracy thrives when citizens are free to question authority, challenge public policies and demand accountability from leaders, regardless of political affiliations. It argued that these freedoms are fundamental pillars of democratic governance and should be protected at all times.

“Whether one agrees with his views or not, democracy requires the protection of the right of citizens to question authority, challenge government policies and hold leaders accountable,” the party stated.

The DLA further emphasised that governments should respond to criticism through improved governance and service delivery rather than actions that could be perceived as suppressing opposing views. According to the statement, criticism and dissent are natural components of democratic systems and should be met with openness, transparency and accountability.

“The answer to criticism is not suppression; the answer is better governance, greater accountability and improved service delivery to the people,” the party said.

While reiterating its commitment to the rule of law, the alliance called on the judiciary to continue to uphold fairness, impartiality and constitutional principles in the discharge of its responsibilities. It also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Attorney-General of the Federation and other relevant authorities to demonstrate greater tolerance toward opposing voices and strengthen democratic institutions through inclusive governance.

Beyond the issue surrounding Sowore, the DLA argued that Nigeria’s pressing challenges require urgent attention and practical solutions. It identified insecurity, economic decline and social inequality as areas demanding stronger government intervention, noting that effective responses should combine improved security operations, economic reforms, job creation, intelligence gathering, anti-corruption measures and investments in education and social welfare.

The party maintained that national unity and democratic stability can only be sustained when citizens are confident that their rights are protected and that differing opinions can be expressed freely without fear of persecution. It urged political leaders and institutions to safeguard the principles of democracy and ensure that the country’s democratic space remains open to constructive criticism and peaceful opposition.

The statement comes amid increasing debates over civil liberties, political freedoms and the role of institutions in balancing law enforcement with the protection of constitutional rights, issues that continue to shape Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
