Emir Sanusi Calls for Unity to Tackle Nigeria’s Challenges

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on Nigerians to unite in confronting the country’s security and economic challenges, saying the problems are serious but not beyond solution if leaders act with justice and citizens support efforts for reform.

Speaking during the Sallah Durbar in Kano on Wednesday, the Emir said Nigeria is currently facing difficulties across security, the economy and social cohesion, but expressed optimism that meaningful progress can be achieved through collective responsibility.

“By the grace of God, there will be solutions as long as leaders ensure justice and followers support them,” he said, stressing that governance must be rooted in fairness, accountability and concern for the welfare of citizens.

Sanusi led the Eid prayers at the Kano Central Eid Ground in Kofar Mata, where he also reminded Muslims of the spiritual significance of Eid sacrifice, describing it as an act of obedience and devotion that strengthens faith and compassion for the less privileged.

He urged worshippers to extend support to vulnerable members of society, particularly the poor, as part of the values promoted during the Sallah period.

The prayers were attended by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, his deputy Murtala Garo, senior government officials, religious leaders and thousands of worshippers who gathered to observe the Eid celebration.

Following the prayers, the Emir participated in the traditional horse-riding procession from the palace to the Eid ground and back, a key feature of Kano’s centuries-old Sallah Durbar cultural heritage.

The event attracted large crowds of residents, visitors and tourists, reflecting the cultural importance of the Durbar as a symbol of unity, tradition and celebration in northern Nigeria.

In his message, Sanusi also urged citizens to turn towards God, obey the law, prioritise education and pay greater attention to raising responsible children as part of long-term nation-building.

He further appealed for continued support for security agencies in their efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.

This year’s celebration also marks a return of fuller Durbar festivities, including traditional processions such as Hawan Nassarawa, Hawan Daushe, Hawan Fanisau and Hawan Dorayi, which were previously affected by emirate-related disputes that led to restrictions in recent years.
